Back to school

While kids are gearing up to go back to school, the prevailing food news is focused on getting kids to eat healthy. One writer, Charlotte Perkins, stood out among today's food sections with a note of nostalgia to remind us to look back to June Cleaver days. This sweet piece comes from the Houston Daily Journal, the oldest continuously-operating business in Houston County, Georgia, that published its first newspaper issue in 1870!

The first week of school is exciting – seeing old friends and meeting new ones, getting to know new teachers, facing up to new subjects or taking on new challenges. It can also be a little stressful. Whether your child is facing the challenge of learning to read, the mysteries of calculus, the pressures of peers or the high hope of “making the team,” it will help if home is a safe haven where the pressure’s off and friends are welcome.

And, no matter what the obesity police say, it will help if there are cookies. That’s one thing that June Cleaver was right about: cookies and milk.....
